The 2008 edition of the Guwahati Chess Championship for Age Group & Women was organised at the Rajbari Athletic Club, the birthplace of the Association, from July 4 to July 8 last.

The 32nd All Assam Chess Championship (Age group & Women), was held at Duliajan during 16-28 Apr 2008 while the 31st All Assam Chess Championship for the year 2007 which was due in Dec 2007 was organised at Sivsagar from May 24 to May 31 last.

We organised B.C.Kakaty Memorial Prize Money Chess Tournament 2008 during 17-21 January last in fond memory of our ex President and Ex Treasurer, All assam Chess Association Late B.C.Kakaty who was a dedicated chess personality and a genuine gentleman.

4th seed Arjun Tiwari (2240) of Indian Railways took the title with 8.5 out of 10 rounds, remained undefeated and collected the prize money of Rs.35000/-.The top seed, IM S.Satyapragyan (2404) of Orissa who also scored 8.5 points missed out the top spot due to poor "Progressive Score" (48 to Arjun's 49.5) and had to remain content with the next best position. Dronavalli Harika (2480) , seeded no.1, could not do justice to her top seeding, stumbled in the last couple of rounds and had to remain content at the 5th position after scoring 8.5 out of 13. Soumya Swaminathan (2244), who also scored 8.5, was placed 8th. Among other Indian representatives, Sanjay Eesha Karavade (2331) finished 9th with 8.0 points, Priya Panneer Ramachandran (2129) finished 13th also with 8.0 points, Mary Ann Gomes (2262) was placed 22nd with 7.0 points and Padmini Rout (2226) was 28th (6.5 points).

Anand won the World Chess Championship 2007 held from September 12 to 30 in the Sheraton Centro Historico Hotel in Mexico City. He finished undefeated with 9.0 points out of a possible 14.Kramnik (8.0) beat Aronian (6.0) to move to second place ahead of Boris Gelfand (8.0) on tie-break [Sonneborn-Berger tie-break system or 'SB score' ( A player's SB score is calculated by adding the sum of the conventional scores of the players they have defeated to half the sum of the conventional scores of those they have drawn against ) was applied ].
