JUGAL KISHORE NEWATIA MEMORIAL INTERNATIONAL OPEN RATING CHESS TOURNAMENT 2007 starts. It was inaugurated by Mr Bibhuti Gogoi, President, All Assam Chess Association at 4.00 p.m. at the fully air-conditioned and
spacious auditorium
inside the big Shilpgram complex. The tournament has attracted only 90 players from all over the country, thanks to a sudden official recognition given to another FIDE Rating tournament in Chennai starting 12.10.07 which forced a good number of players from Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh and the adjoining states to back off from this tournament despite earlier telephonic confirmation of participation and also for the fact that school exams are going on in the state.
15.10.07 :
JUGAL KISHORE NEWATIA MEMORIAL INTERNATIONAL OPEN RATING CHESS TOURNAMENT 2007 concludes successfully. 4th seed Arjun Tiwari (2240) of Indian Railways took the title with 8½ out of 10 rounds, remained undefeated and collected the prize money of Rs.35000/-.The top seed, IM S.Satyapragyan (2404) of Orissa who also scored 8½ points missed out the top spot due to poor "Progressive Score" (48 to Arjun's 49½) and had to remain content with the next best position. IM Atanu Lahiri (2290), the 2nd seed scored 8 and settled for the third position. Laishram Imocha (2272), the highest FIDE rated player from Assam and the National 'A' qualifier could not find his touch and had to remain content much lower the order at 21st position after scoring only 6 points. Among the promising youngsters of Assam, Rajib Dhar (2090) of Guwahati and Debashish Dutta (2061), also of Guwahati performed creditably and grabbed the 6th (7 points) and 12th (6½ points) spots respectively.
